What does digestion do?
Our body has to chop up and utilize the food it receives in order to extract energy, building blocks for the body’s substance and nutrients. Only through a complex interaction of physical, chemical and enzymatic processes, this becomes possible. The processes take place at different stages of digestion in special organs. Step by step the food is split up so that the nutrients can enter the blood. Unusable is excreted via the bowel movement.

- Mouth: Digestion starts in the mouth when we chew our teeth and chop up food. During chewing, salivation is also stimulated, making the food slurry slippery. Saliva also contains enzymes that break down starch into sugar.
The tongue also contributes to digestion: it mixes the chyme and triggers the swallowing reflex. The epiglottis lowers when swallowing, the trachea is closed so that no food gets into it. From the mouth, the porridge then passes through the esophagus into the stomach.
- Stomach: The already digested starch is further digested in the stomach. In addition, proteins (proteins) are broken down into their constituents (peptides).
In the stomach, there is an acidic environment, as the gastric juice formed by the stomach contains, among other things, acid. This acid contributes significantly to digestion and kills bacteria. So that the gastric acid does not attack the stomach itself, its inner wall is lined with gastric mucosa. The stomach produces mucus through it, which lays protectively on the stomach wall.
What is the duration of digestion?
In each organ, digestion takes different amounts of time. In the stomach, the chyme is about four hours, in the small intestine up to six and in the large intestine it takes up to eight hours until the digestive remains are eliminated.
How long the period of digestion is depended not only on individual factors such as the predisposition but also on our diet. Above all, a high-fat content of the diet can delay gastric emptying. Also, consistency and temperature of the food can influence the duration of the digestion. Easily digestible food is, for example, fruit or vegetables. Very greasy food such as fast food, however, is rather difficult to digest. Often a meal is digested better and faster if seasoned with fennel or coriander. Tea made from fennel, anise, and cumin can also aid digestion, as it contains essential oils that stimulate gastric juice production
